PROBE - Orissa

Participation of Youth in Real-time/field Observation for Benefit to Education (PROBE) is conceived for school children in Orissa. The project lunched through the Inter-Sectoral Science & Technology Advisory Committee (IS-STAC), Department of Science & Technology, Government of India and aims at understanding weather and climate by school children in Orissa costal belt and to encourage participation of young school children in acquisition, generation, use and dissemination of field data.

SUPRATIVA has been appointed as a Technical Resource Centre by the Department of Science & Technology, Government of India to implement the programme in Cuttack & Jagatsinghpur districts. It involves opening of PROBE Weather Laboratory within the school premises in which the students are encouraged to take and record daily weather observations. In this multi-institutional project, a two-way relationship is envisaged between school Students/Teacher and Professors in Centers of Higher Learning.

Both observing and learning about weather and climate is emphasized in this project. Observation protocols are devised and the data collected is sent to Technical Resource Center (SUPRATIVA) and DST and also to India Meteorological Department for quality check and consistency. SUPRATIVA has extended this programme to 25 selected schools Cuttack and Jagatsinghpur districts. From weather data base created by school children, the DST will utilize the PROBE data for research in universities on the topics aiming at water management, climate change, disaster mitigation, bio-diversity as well as meso-scale modeling studies to supplement our efforts in achieving better local forecasts. Through participation in PROBE in different schools, young minds will be exposed to scientific intricacies of weather, will be moved to pursue science as a career and will develop better understanding to take safety measures from weather related hazards.

Establishment of TRC:
The Technical Resource Centre (TRC) has been established in the Office Building of SUPRATIVA located at Fakirpada Village of Cuttack District, Orissa. The centre is equipped with necessary infrastructural facilities with student data server, broadband internet connectivity, meteorological instruments like maximum and minimum thermometer, dry and wet bulb thermometer, rain gauge, wind vane, cup counter anemometer, sunshine recorder, evaporimeter etc.

Setting-up of Observatory in Schools:
As per the specific instructions of DST, meteorological instruments like maximum and minimum thermometer, dry and wet bulb thermometer, rain gauge, wind vane, cup counter anemometer, stevenson screen have been installed in all participating schools. All the instruments were procured from M/S Hydromat Instruments, Ahmedabad which is an IMD certified company. For generating data, Desktop Computers were procured and supplied to each school.

Capacity Building Training at TRC Level:
In order to refresh the knowledge and enhance the capacity of coordinating teachers & participating students of PROBE-Orissa Programme, training programme was organized by SUPRATIVA (TRC) at regular interval of time.

Lecture by Invited Experts for Students:
Organisation of lecture programme in schools by involving experts from different line departments is one of our regular activities under this project. Persons like Dr. Sangram Keshari Nayak, Dr. Sanjay Saha, Dr. Mirza Jaynul Baig, Dr. Sudarsan Sasmal, Mr. Bikash Mohapatra and Mr. Mr. Krushna Chandra Das are attending the programme as visiting lecturers. Topics like climate change and global warming, functions of meteorological instruments, weather in daily life, weather observation and forecasting, hazards mitigation in extreme weather condition etc. are being covered up for the benefit of participating students & teachers of PROBE-Orissa Programme.  

Weather Data Collection:
The specified meteorological instruments have already been installed in all schools and all are now in operation. The temperature in the air is measured by thermometer to know about the weather conditions. The maximum thermometer is a mercury thermometer which is installed horizontally. It is giving the reading of highest temperature reached in a day. Similarly, the minimum thermometer is an alcohol thermometer is being used to measure the lowest temperature attained in a day. The dry bulb thermometer is a mercury thermometer which is recording the ambient air temperature. The wet bulb thermometer has been wrapped with a small piece of muslin cloth around the bulb, which is keeping moist of the atmosphere.

The students are using rain gauge for measurement of rainfall. It has a rain collector funnel and a measuring glass. The water collected in the funnel is giving the total rainfall of every day. The measurement of wind velocity and wind direction is important parameters for knowing the weather. The installed wind vane is showing wind direction. It instrument consists of a flat fin at one end and a cylindrical mild steel counter weight as pointer at the other end. The wind vane is installed at a height of 10 meters from ground level. For measuring the wind velocity, students are using cup anemometer is used. A specific format has been developed by SUPRATIVA (TRC) in consultation with experts for the students in order to collect weather data from their meteorological instruments everyday. The format contains information on daily weather condition like minimum & maximum temperature, humidity, moisture, rainfall, wind velocity/speed & direction etc.

PROBE-Orissa newsletter is a half yearly periodical of SUPRATIVA that attempts to educate the school children on developments in the understanding of weather and its contribution to climate change. This will give an impetus on the holistic application of the knowledge gained through direct operation of instruments, data acquisition, data interpretation in terms of local weather predictions and implications in agriculture, imminent disaster management as well as daily routine life style.  This includes news, views, research briefs, new concepts and ideas.
